Concerned about traffic speeds in Charlbury?
Charlbury’s Community Speedwatch initiative has just appointed a new lead co-ordinator, Damien Lewington (July 2023). Watch this space for the revival of the speedwatch camera around the roads of Charlbury.

The Town Council has supported Speedwatch initiatives with investment of over £10,000 in the speed monitoring devices seen around our town from time to time.  These have provided useful insight and data helping us understand where excessive speeds are.

A co-ordinator is required by Thames Valley Police as a point of contact, to log information and ensure that basic risk assessments are followed.

Speedwatch is also looking for new volunteers to help run sessions (ideally three people are required for safety purposes) at different locations around town and this would suit anyone with an interest in their work and the odd hour or two to spare. Brief training is provided.

If you’re interested please contact Lisa, the town clerk in the first instance: 07311 259412

FixMyStreet Superuser

Oxfordshire County Council created OXTOG – Oxfordshire Together – a while ago to mobilise and support a team of volunteers around the County to help look after their own area’s roads, pavements and public rights of way.

With the County staffing shortages, the Highways Officers can’t be everywhere so the SuperUser is, in effect, their ‘eyes and ears’ on road problems and defects in the village.  They are trained to report road defects within the village area directly, which speeds up the repair process.

Charlbury now has its very own FixMyStreet SuperUser, Gary Harrison. You may see him wandering around the town in his special Hi-Vis jacket!

If you find a problem with a road near you, then please either report it yourself on FixMyStreet.com or let Gary know – contact him on

Changes to Traffic in Charlbury

The measures listed below as part of the Traffic Regulation Order, have been accepted by Oxfordshire County Council and have now been implemented.

  • Parking restriction on Nine Acres Lane – from the junction of Nine Acres Lane with Thames Street/Pound Hill to the point where the road widens outside Jeffs Terrace
  • Parking alterations on Market Street – time restriction of 1 hour for spaces outside the Pharmacy during the daytime. Remove the parking prohibition (double yellow lines) opposite the former Post Office. Alterations to white line outside The Old Post House
  • Parking restriction on Church Street – Parking prohibition for one car’s length between the Rose & Crown and Ceorl House
  • Parking restriction on Grammar School Hill – parking prohibition [both sides] for approximately 60m into the 20mph limit and 20m in the 30mph limit, to aid visibility at the brow of the hill.
  • Parking restriction on Browns Lane – southernmost parking space. This has been requested by Stagecoach and others. If a wide vehicle is parked in this space or a parked vehicle is away from the kerb, this can block a bus from getting through
  • 30mph limit extension on Spelsbury Road – Extend 30mph restriction along B4026 Spelsbury Road to a point past the entrance to Cotswold Caravan and Camping
